It's pretty much a primer for your lashes to add extra length & volume whilst giving extra curl. It conditions and moisturises too to stop your eyelashes from drying out and splitting. My lashes are really light in colour naturally and quite short so they're not exactly noticeable without help - using this product is crucial for me now as it makes mascara so much more effective!
My current favourite mascara to use with it is Green People's Volumising Mascara (RRP £14.75). It's certified organic, over 98% natural and super pigmented. I do use it by itself occasionally for very natural looking lashes but paired with Jane Iredale's PureLash the results are good enough to rival the best high street mascaras!

I think Green People have changed the formula and brush since I got mine so I'm looking forward to trying that out as this particular brush isn't the best to be honest! The staying power of this mascara is great though. I do tend to get a little bit of fall out towards the end of the day but that's pretty normal for most mascaras for me.
I tried to take before and after photos but they didn't turn out too well as my eyes and I have been really tired recently - not pretty! Mayah has the photos covered in her post over at Call It Vanity though so go check that out if you want to see a before/after comparison!
Have you tried either of these products before? What's your favourite mascara?
